Today's harvest on this glorious wet friday

All blurry today, Leon is doing marvelously on day 5 of no nappies. I'm still reminding him to use the potty but it's all systems go, he's finally given in to it and cooperating. It's amazing the difference in him.
Picture here of all the hover flies on the sunflowers.
I have been a bit distracted from the garden this last few days with potty training which tends to involve not moving very much and if we do military style organisation. I was surprised to find a monster courgette quite so large as I do go out most days and see how they are getting on and pick them as they get just big enough so we don't end up with monsters like this :)
I must say I'm not impressed with one pan of spuds for the expense of a bag of compost, the growing bag and all that feeding, tending and watering. The potatoes were delicious but I do need to look at ways to up the productivity. The toms are starting to ripen, I get a few a day which is just nice :)
And, how could I forget, the first spikey cucumber!!!! There are another 2 that are just days away too.

combine!

I've known for a week or so that the wheat at the back of our street was ripe and any day soon the combines would be there to do their thing. I've been keeping an ear out ever since I saw two enormous combines drive down the muddy track. We looked yesterday and the cutting blades were there and they'd done some of the field right at the back, but no baling had happened and the enormous field behind the orchard estate was still to do. about 4pm, I went into the kitchen and I could hear some heavy machinery somewhere, so I ran out the door to confirm my suspicions and yes! there they were! so wellies on and out we went for some combine/tractor/baler action on our doorstep!

Veg in the Garden Early August

We are harvesting courgettes on a daily basis, herbs of course, I've also had some success with planting some chive seeds from the flowers this spring, they are just coming up, I can get them nice and strong and plant them out in the autumn so they will be well established for next spring. I've seen a fair number of white butterflies and the brassica leaves were starting to look a bit holey, but then we noticed dozens of hover flies eating all the eggs. There's a squash coming on nicely as are the corn plants and cucumbers. There were 3 ripe tomotoes, they lasted about minute from picking, Leon had one, I had one and I gave one to tob. They were very sweet :)
