A weekend with good weather and very good company

This weekend was really lovely. A proper summer weekend, enjoying those closest both family wise and in proximity. We haven't stepped outside Ely but haven't been short of company. Ellen and Dan got back from their holiday, cute Italian outfit for Leon in hand midweek. They came round for lunch on thursday and made a fuss of Leon, which he enjoyed. Friday, they brought round fish and chips in the evening which we ate in the garden and had a really nice evening catching up and seeing their 499 holiday photos of Tuscany. Fortunatley it was a beautiful place so 499 photos wasn't as painful as it sounds!

Saturday we dropped Leon off at Nana and Grumps while we did the usual waitrose run then after picking him up we went round to Fiona's for a BBQ, now, her hubby is American and she's Austrialian so, true to form the food was fabulous, they know how to BBQ and judging on the size of the BBQ I doubt they bought it in B&Q either. It was a very pleasant afternoon with the mums from the Library - they are mostly from the post natal group before mine so down to my knowing Fiona already, I've adopted the other post natal group as well. Their tots are a month or so older than Leon but he doesn't seem that far behind development wise. I'm probably the oldest of them to (I don't know) but I don't feel as old around them - different types I suppose. My group are really nice but I don't have alot in common with them. Oh yeah, one big thing, we all have first born children the same age. At the BBQ all the dads were present too, Tob got on really well with everyone and got invited to take a wednesday off in a couple of weeks to do a musical tots club with another Dad. Unfortunatley Fiona's son, Austin, has developed an ear infection in both ears so by the time we left early evening, he wasn't himself at all, they'd already been to the doctors the day before and got antibiotics but the poor little tot wasn't happy at all. Ear infections are horrible.

Sunday was delightful. Every 6 months, Ely has a French Market in town, french bread baked on the stall, the usual pletherer of cheeses and meats etc. Like a massive outdoor deli. I didn't see much point in buying food and taking it home, but to get some bread, a couple of cheeses and meats, a bottle of chilled rose and take a picnic set sounded to me like the best way to live life! So we sat in the shadow of Ely Cathedral, Ellen brought some Salad and spend a lovely afternoon eating french food and drinking Australian (or was it Californian) Rose! The wine came from our fridge.

It was delicious. Ellen had got wind from the source of all local knowledge (her next door or Doreen to her friends) that there were some open gardens to go round on the way home so about 4 o'clock we pottered down towards prickwillow to see these gardens. They were really beautiful, mature cottage garden style gardens. The houses themselves were all big old detatched places too. I thought Ellen and Dan could open up there's as there's has very similar attributes - it's huge, lovely pond, miles of shrubs and lovely flowers, lovely trees and a well kept lawn. The last garden we saw was the best though, pictures are from there. We trundled over through a country style gate with fully laden Silver Cross, cross country, over land. I think it could give these 3 wheelers with tyres a run for their money! This garden was proably the most mature of the three and had beautiful borders as well as a well laid out shape and a view over the Roswell pits (ponds full of wildlife that go back a long long time) and over to the side a magnificent view of the cathedral. I wouldn't like to put a price on the house and grounds, it was really lovely. All in all we all said we had a fabulous weekend.
